Aura

What is aura?

Auras are transient neurological symptoms that occur in connection with migraine attacks.

Aura does not occur with regular headaches, but can occur with migraines. You can also have migraines without aura.

Auras come on within minutes and can last up to an hour. The symptoms go away on their own.

Aura symptoms can include:

  • Visual phenomena, such as flashes of light or flickering
  • Tingling or numbness, especially in the hands and feet
  • Difficulty moving a body part
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Loss of balance
  • Acute dizziness, tinnitus, double vision, or hearing loss

Aura symptoms can be scary and uncomfortable, but they are not dangerous.
