Breathing guide with Brain Twin Premium
Find peace in five minutes and build a robust foundation against migraines, stress and sleep problems.
Why do we focus on breathing?
Calm, diaphragmatic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system. It lowers heart rate and blood pressure, reduces muscle tension and reduces the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol - a known trigger for migraines. Norwegian research and health experts recommend controlled breathing as a low-threshold measure for stress and sleep difficulties (2)(4).
Immediate stress reduction: breathing exercises are proven to have a calming effect on stress and tension, you will be able to experience a lower heart rate and less muscle tension in a few minutes. You will also be able to experience better sleep. By lowering stress, it will be easier to both fall asleep and sleep more deeply (3).
Gain and possible effect
- Potentially fewer migraine attacks – Breathing exercises and other techniques that can reduce stress appear to have a positive effect for people with migraines. This is gaining increasing attention in research and is mentioned in studies and articles from around the world. (3)
- Rapid stress reduction – Slow breathing reduces heart rate and anxiety and is used clinically as a stress management technique (2).
- Better sleep – SOVno recommends a simple breathing technique at bedtime to help you fall asleep within minutes (3).
How it works
Set your phone to silent and find a comfortable sitting position. Open the Brain Twin app and tap Breathing Guide on the front page. Choose whether you want to breathe for 5 or 10 minutes, and what pace suits you best – calm, medium or a little faster. A circle on the screen expands and contracts to help you keep the rhythm: breathe in when the circle grows, and breathe out when it contracts. The session is automatically saved, so you can see patterns in the statistics over time. (Statistics for the breathing guide are not yet ready.)
Tip: Start with 5 minutes in the morning or evening. Once the exercise feels natural, you can increase to 10 minutes for a deeper effectt.
FAQ
- Do I have to use headphones? – No. The app does not make any sound, but you can set a low background sound (streaming river, waves, "white noise", etc.) that can possibly give you deeper focus, but the guide is designed to work without sound. It is often a personal choice whether you like background sound.
- How often should I do the exercise? – Daily sessions give the best effect. Many people experience extra benefits from short breaks three times a day.
